- When your character has achieved the status of "You feel and inner glow. The Force is with you", you can expect your first visit from the Old Man. The actual time that it takes for the visit to take place varies, as does the location. The Old Man can spawn on any planet in just about any area. The only confirmed requirement is that you have to be outside of NPC cities (he can spawn inside player cities). There are rumors on how to make the Old Man spawn quicker, but none have been proven. The best way is to just go on with what you would normally be doing, and he will find you - even if you are out on a mission.

- Old Man was an Azathanai living in a village in the Bareth Solitude. Draconus called him "Old Man" because the Azathanai had "not yet decided on a name", which Draconus called an "irritating affectation". Despite the name, he appeared to be in his twenties with a narrow, nondescript face and calm, dark eyes. Below the neck, his skin was covered randomly with ring-like tattoos that resembled scars left behind by a pox. A pallid light about the size of a man's head hovered over his left shoulder. His voice made Arathan think of "pond water beneath a thin sheet of ice".
- "Old Man" is a song written and performed by Neil Young on his 1972 album Harvest. The song was written for the caretaker of the Northern California Broken Arrow Ranch, which Young purchased for $350,000 in 1970. The song compares a young man's life to an old man's and shows that the young man has, to some extent, the same needs as the old one. James Taylor played six-string banjo (tuned like a guitar) and sang on the song, and Linda Ronstadt also contributed vocals. In the movie Heart of Gold, Young introduces the song as follows:
- The Old Man is a human unit that you will be able to create after defeating a single Old Man unit, first encountered as an 'optional' target during Episode 3: Monetopia - Peaceful Hill. As a feeble unit, the Old Man is most unsuited for battle, having low stats across the board. Even with INT as his most prominent stat, it is still considerably low. He is proficient in no arts, with E being his highest rank for Status skills. In order to make the Old Man at least survive in battle, he will likely need a very good INT or Status-based weapon and a Title that can boost his abysmal proficiency at least a little.
- Later on, he is seen in a wheelchair as Old man's son is complaining to Kawazu about not paying his medical bills. Akio owes them because he hit the old man with a car. As the detectives exit the hospital and drive away, the old man's writing is visible. It is revealed that when Tsuki had passed by the man, she was passing by the hospital, where she eventually ended up.
- The Old Man is a pre-boss NPC. He does nothing but walk around at the entrance to a Dungeon. If a player attempts to talk to him at night, a warning dialogue will appear asking if the player wants to continue. During the day he will just tell you to come back at night. To enter the Dungeon he is guarding, Skeletron must be defeated. He will judge players with less than 15 hearts (300 File:Heart.png) and/or less than 10 defense as unworthy to fight Skeletron. This, however, does not hinder the player from summoning Skeletron.
