Synopsis
  • Jonah Hex is riding through the woods and comes upon a stream at which a black woman is kneeling. When she sees his uniform she flees in fear. She falls and hits her head on a rock, falling into the stream and beginning to drown. Hex lassoes her and pulls her out of the river. He is trying to get her to breathe again when a group of black men arrives on the scene. They instantly assume that Hex has killed the woman and get ready to hang Hex from a nearby tree. At that moment a group of white men arrive and kill the black men, rescuing Hex.
  • Back in town, the men talk of the changing times, Lincoln's reformation and Hex's bravery in wearing the Confederate uniform so openly. Hex kills all but one of the men and takes the survivor back to the river, where the black men were killed. He then forces the man to dig seven graves: One for each of the black men, and one for himself. After the man is dead, Hex digs a grave for the black woman and buries her.

quotation
  • His insistence on wearing the Confederate uniform until the day of his death in 1904 stands as a symbol of personal shame. For he knew that anyone who saw the gray colors would greet him with hatred and revulsion.
