  • The Canary Republic' (officially the Popular 'Republic of the Canary Islands, often known as the Canary Islands Republic or simply the Canary Islands) is a survivor republic off the African coast. An island nation, it consists of seven landmasses - Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro and Fuerteventura. Due to its geographic isolation, the Republic has only recently established foreign relations, and a localised economy dominated by agriculture has prevailed over international trade, though this is set to change. While a multiple parties are permitted, a socialist government has ruled without interval since foundation. Democratic elections, while permitted in the constitution, have yet to be held, and under current circumstances are unlikely to be in the forseeable future. Interestingly, a tourist board, to promote foreign visits to the islands, was established in 2006, although it is yet to come into full function.
