Gagh is a Klingon delicacy consisting of unprocessed serpent worms. Although most Klingons prefer it live, it can be served stewed as well. Many humans tend to find it unappetizing, though both William Riker and Jean-Luc Picard claimed to have developed a taste for it, and Julian Bashir occasionally enjoyed it. Most eat it not for the taste, which is described as disgusting, but for the sensation of the gagh spasming in one's mouth as it dies. (TNG: "A Matter Of Honor"; DS9: "Melora") However, Richard Boswell was known to enjoy the flavor and ate it quite prolifically. (Star Trek: Remington)

  • Gagh, usually referred to as Serpent Worms when not in cuisine, are small worm-like organisms native to planet Qo'noS and commonly eaten alive by Klingons. There are at least 51 known varieties of this delicacy, some of which appear to be made from different worm species (Bithool Gagh have feet; Filden Gagh can squirm; Meshta Gagh can jump; Torgrud Gagh can wiggle) while others are simply used to refer to different forms of preparing (Wistan Gagh is packed in Targ blood). The term Racht is also commonly used and seems to describe a larger variety of Gagh.

Allegedly, the actual taste of gagh was revolting, even to Klingons, and was eaten solely for the unique sensation of their death-throe spasms within one's mouth and stomach. (ENT: "Sleeping Dogs"; TNG: "A Matter Of Honor" , "Unification I" ; DS9: "Melora", "Inquisition")
  • Gagh worms that are intended to be served are fed only a mixture of diluted blood, which they find very unappetizing and therefore only consume when they are nearly starving. The type of animal from which the blood has been taken greatly influences the eventual flavor. Just prior to being served, the worms are poured into a bowl of thick sauce which contains an extremely flavorful herb which the worms find very delicious, and devour, even though it is toxic to them, and kills them within minutes. Gagh is considered best consumed live, therefore it is customary to eat it as quickly as possible. If the worms cannot be eaten before they all die, then the entire mixture is saved and heated up later as a sort of stew. (ST reference: Klingon for the Galactic Traveler)

  • Many Humans found gagh unappetizing, though both William T. Riker and Jean-Luc Picard claimed to have developed a taste for it, and Doctor Julian Bashir occasionally enjoyed it. Allegedly, the actual taste of gagh was revolting, even to Klingons, and was eaten solely for the unique sensation of their death-throe spasms within one's mouth and stomach. (ENT: "Sleeping Dogs"; TNG: "A Matter Of Honor" , "Unification I" ; DS9: "Melora", "Inquisition") In 2154, Fleet Admiral Krell casually ate gagh as he informed Harris of Section 31 that he was reneging on their arrangement. After Captain Jonathan Archer had been exposed to and subsequently cured of the Klingon Augment virus, he had a "strange craving" for "a plateful of live gagh." (ENT: "Divergence") In 2373, Neelix served gagh aboard the USS Voyager for a special Klingon breakfast buffet. However, none of the crew seemed very enthusiastic about it. He did so again in 2377 when Voyager took aboard Klingons whose ancestors had migrated to the Delta Quadrant. (VOY: "Fair Trade", "Prophecy") Regular shipments of gagh started to arrive on Deep Space 9 after a permanent Klingon military presence was established on the station in mid 2373. Major Kira Nerys claimed that a tentacle grabbed her hand while she was checking the contents of one such crate. (DS9: "A Simple Investigation") In 2374, Bashir was given a plate of gagh intended for Worf instead of the red leaf tea, scones and Moba jam he had ordered. He rejected it as it was "too early." This may have been done to test his resolve as it took place within a holodeck simulation designed by Luther Sloan to test Bashir's loyalty. (DS9: "Inquisition") In 2375, a shipment of gagh ordered by Jadzia Dax for the celebration of General Martok's birthday arrived on Deep Space 9. Ezri Dax later rejected the gagh due to being sickened by Jadzia's memories of it. She wanted it thrown out into space but was disallowed due to environmental laws. (DS9: "Prodigal Daughter")

If the worms cannot be eaten before they all die, then the entire mixture is saved and heated up later as a sort of stew. (ST reference: Klingon for the Galactic Traveler) Whilst the dish is intended to be eaten live, it is not swallowed live. Instead, the worm is killed between the teeth, with the blood being consumed as a delicacy. Swallowing live gagh results in the worm surviving in the intestines as a parasite. William Riker discovered this fact after serving aboard the IKS Pagh in 2365, as part of the Officer Exchange Program. (TNG episode: "A Matter of Honor", TNG novel: A Time to Kill) There are more than fifty-one varieties of gagh. They include bithool gagh, torgud gagh, filden gagh, meshta gagh and wistan gagh. Curzon Dax and Jadzia Dax enjoyed the varieties, although Ezri Dax did not. (DS9 episode: "Prodigal Daughter") The phrase "kill gagh" is a Klingon expression which means be counterproductive, as gagh is best eaten live. It is used in phrases such as, "If you destroy the merchant ship, you kill gagh." (ST reference: Klingon for the Galactic Traveler) Some prefer racht, the other live worm dish. (TNG novel: Before Dishonor) Bithool gagh was preferred by B'Elanna Torres. (ST reference: Star Trek Cookbook) Gagh is also commonly eaten by sea pochtoQs. (ST novel: Excelsior: Forged in Fire)
