The Anti-Socialist Laws were a series of laws issued and pushed through by Chancellor Otto von Bismarck in 1878, to curb socialism and it's organizations. The laws banned socialist politcal parties and meetings, arrested socialist leaders, curbed freedoms of press and speech, restricted socialist rights, and clamped down on their influence. The laws largely failed and they were repealed in 1890.
