Since the habitable zone is the area of a star system in which a planet could support life, this planet was previously thought to be able to support life. However, due to the greenhouse effect, the planet is now assumed to be inhabitable. However, Gliese 581 d, the next planet in the system, has been found to go through the outer edge of the habitable zone, making it able to support life of some kind.
