The movie premiered on December 12, 1966, and was a box-office failure for the Andersons. The failure of the movie ended up cutting the second season of Thunderbirds down to six episodes. Surprised by the underperformance of Thunderbirds Are Go, the United Artists distributors authorised the production of a sequel, Thunderbird 6, which received a similar result.
