abstract
  • PC Eric Wilson and his colleague Sgt Harrison were were dispatched to 7 Coronation Street when Rita Fairclough reported a break-in in November 1989. Harrison inspected the house and took a statement from Rita, while Wilson questioned Alan Bradley at the building site across the street when Rita named him as the culprit. On being questioned about his whereabouts, Alan insisted that he'd been on the building site all morning, a statement backed up by Eddie Ramsden and the site foreman. Alan stuck the knife in by telling Wilson to ignore anything Rita said as she was a vindictive woman. Alan had in fact been in the house, but his goal was to frighten Rita by moving the biscuit tin containing the deeds to the house. Terrified of what Alan would do next, Rita demanded that he be locked up, but Harrison told her that they would be taking no further action against him. The incident caused the rift between Rita and Jenny Bradley to deepen, leading to Jenny moving out and Rita flitting to Blackpool to escape her tormentor. The character was credited as "PC Wilson". His first name was given in dialogue. Mark Jordon played two other police officers in the programme - an unnamed PC in 1988 and P.C. Betts in 1991. It is possible that these were all intended to be the same character.
