He played right defence for the Winnipeg Falcons, the Canadian team which won the gold medal. He died on October 25, 1968 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He was of Icelandic descent. Outside of his hockey life Johannesson was an avid aviator and trained with the Royal Flying Corps in Ismaïlia, Egypt during World War I. After his retirement from ice hockey he worked as an airport manager, flying instructor and managed the ‘Johannesson Flying Service' for flying transportation.
