"Strike cruiser" is a term used by the Klingon Defense Force (among others) for some mid-range starships, smaller and less versatile than mainline capital ships, but more able to act as a cruiser in combat situations when compared to than mere scouting or patrol ships. They tend to be most effective when operating in groups or supporting larger vessels. The equivalent terms used by the Federation Starfleet would probably be "light cruiser" or "destroyer".

  • A strike cruiser (proposed hull designator: CSGN) was a proposal from DARPA on the next generation of cruisers in the late 1970s. It was to be a guided missile attack cruiser with a displacement of around , armed and equipped with SM-2, Harpoon and Tomahawk missiles, an 8-inch gun, and the Aegis phased array radar system. A prototype strike cruiser was to be the refurbished USS Long Beach (CGN-9); at a cost of roughly $800 million, however this never came to pass.

Originally, eight to a dozen strike cruisers were projected. The cruiser was to have arsenal ship offensive capabilities coupled with Aegis defensive capabilities in a nuclear-powered package. The class would have complemented the Aegis-equipped fleet defense (DDG-47) version of the Spruance class destroyers. After the CSGN cancellation, the Aegis destroyers were expanded into the Ticonderoga-class (CG-47) Aegis cruiser program.

Following the Dominion War Starfleet planned to create a variant of heavy cruisers, tentatively referred to as "strike cruisers" that made use of the latest developments in propulsion technology and design to produce heavy cruisers that had the performance more akin to a standard cruiser in terms of speed and manoeuvrability. (Spacedock: The Advanced Starship and Construction Manual) The Romulan Star Navy used vessels that it classified as strike cruisers, which were roughly equivalent to the Starfleet version. They also used the swift cruiser designation for vessels that were similar to strike cruisers. (Ship Recognition Manual, Volume 5: Starships of the Romulan Star Empire)
  • Like Battle Barges, Strike Cruisers do not represent a single class of Imperial starship or a specific, standardised configuration of weapons systems and other capabilities, but actually represent a large range of different Space Marine starships in the Light Cruiser tonnage class that are used for the same basic tasks. Firstly, Strike Cruisers must be fast, with a substantial troop transport capacity and multiple means for delivering troops to a planetary surface rapidly, whether that be through the use of teleporters, Drop Pods, or launch bays equipped with Thunderhawks. Within the demands of these basic operational parameters, Strike Cruisers can actually take a wide array of different physical forms, although most of them have become outfitted with the mighty Bombardment Cannon to support landing troops from orbit. The conception of the Strike Cruiser is believed to rely heavily on the original plans for the Ebon Drake, a new type of vessel developped by the XVIIIth Legion - the Salamanders - a scant few years before the Horus Heresy. Alledgedly, the Primarch Vulkan had a hand in the Ebon Drake’s creation and also gifted its plans to several other Primarchs, but only a few prototypes had been built before the galaxy was engulfed in civil war. It would not be before the beginning of the Great Scouring in 019.M31, when the victorious Loyalists set out to purge the galaxy that the Ebon Drake’s designs where refined in preparation of the Second Founding. The Grey Knights, perhaps the most elite and secretive of the Space Marine Chapters, maintain their base on Saturn's moon of Titan within the Solar System itself, close to Mars and the primary shipyards of the Adeptus Mechanicus, so their Strike Cruisers are highly advanced vessels, utilising the most advanced weapons, armour, warp-drives, Void Shields and other systems available in the Imperium, even by the already high technological standards of the Space Marines. The Grey Knights Strike Cruisers are piloted by the most elite and finest Navigators in the Imperium, capable of navigating efficient courses through the chaotic Warp. The Grey Knights fleet is based at the Broadsword Station, located in orbit above the moon Titan. Other Astartes Chapters also possess widely differing forms of Strike Cruiser, each shaped by the Chapter's long centuries of tradition and varying tactical doctrines. The Strike Cruisers pictured here simply represent several possibilities for this wide array of physical differences.
