John William Edward Tanner (born July 10, 1937) was a politician from Ohio who served as Mayor of Cincinnati from 1984-1991 and Governor of Ohio from 1991 to 1999. A Democrat, he was his party's candidate for President in the 2000 Presidential election. Following his electoral defeat, Tanner joined the Cleveland-based law firm of Hanratty, Tanner and Brick as a senior partner. He was encouraged to run for a vacant Senate seat in 2004, but he declined citing health concerns at the time and his age at that point.
