- Magická škola pro dívky, nachází se na ostrově Thaneddu nedaleko pobřeží. Byla založena v 9. století čarodějkou Klárou Larissou Winter. Studují zde dívky z předních severských rodů a školné zde není žádná levná záležitost. Přesto mohou na akademii studovat i nemajetné dívky, pokud u nich některá z čarodějek rozezná výjimečný talent a rozhodne se sponzorovat jejich školné. Díky Arethuse značně zbohatlo přilehlé město Gors Velen, kde si čarodějky opatřují vše potřebné. Adeptky nemají povoleno samy opouštět ostrov. Rektorkou Arethusy v době děje románů je Tissaia de Vries.
- Arethusa is a tiny, under developed, and new nation at 3 days old with citizens primarily of Mixed ethnicity whose religion is Christianity. It is a backwards nation when it comes to technology and many refer to it unkindly as a 'Third World Nation'. Its citizens enjoy freedom from high taxation and as a result tend to earn more money. The citizens of Arethusa work diligently to produce Coal and Gems as tradable resources for their nation. It is a very passive country when it comes to foreign affairs and has no interests in war. Arethusa is currently researching nuclear technology for the use of nuclear power plants but believes nuclear weapons should be banned. Plans are on the way within Arethusa to open new rehabilitation centers across the nation and educate its citizens of the dangers
- She was originally an Eleian Nymph who escaped to the fled to the island to escape the amorous pursuit of the river-god Alpheios. There she was transformed into the spring of the same name. Alpheios followed in her wake, flowing beneath the sea to spring forth anew on the Sicilian mainland and mingle his waters with hers. Arethusa occasionally appeared on coins as a young girl with a net in her hair and dolphins around her head.
