David Mattingly was born in Fort Collins, Colorado. David began drawing and painting as a small child, influenced by comic books, Edgar Rice Burroughs, and a wide array of artists from Jim Steranko, to N.C. Wyeth, to Jackson Pollock. During this time he contributed to several Disney films including the science fiction film The Black Hole (1979, along with TOS actor Stephen McEveety, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier special effects foreman Mike Edmonson, and Star Trek: The Motion Picture special effects artist Barry Seybert), the mystery film The Watcher in the Woods (1980), the science fiction film TRON (1982), the comic adaptation Dick Tracy (1990), and more recently the science fiction thriller I, Robot (2004).
