Starting 48th in the field of forty-nine, Finger blew his engine early in the race and finished a disappointing 47th. Finger's next two races came during the 1972 season, when he started the year off by making the prestigious Daytona 500. Starting 17th in the field of forty, Finger again fell victim to engine woes and finished 31st. Luckily, he rebounded well later in the year, finishing a career-best 11th place at Ontario. Finger's next few starts would occur during the 1979 season, when he finished a career-high 65th in points. It was not a grand year for the driver. He failed to finish a single race, blowing his engine in two events and crashing out of the other. Still, those races came on some of NASCAR's biggest tracks where Finger finished 19th at Talladega, 34th at College Station, and 39th in the July Daytona race. Finger's final career race came in 1981, when he competed at College Station one more time. Finger closed out his career well, completing all but nineteen laps to finish a solid 13th.
