Richard Winton was a member of the Manticoran royal family, the first child and only son of Crown Prince Edward Winton and his wife, Cynthia Gundersen-Winton. His sister was Sophie Winton. He trained at the Academy to become an officer of the Royal Manticoran Navy before he became the crown prince of Manticore upon the abdication of his grandfather, and continued his military career even thereafter. In 1543 PD, he reported for shipboard duty on the elderly corvette HMS Hercules. Prince Richard and the rest of the crew were killed when the ship was destroyed by a missile in the battle against the Volsung Mercenaries. (MA2)
