The weapons had a series of magnetic accelerators along the barrel and a particle manipulation system. Power was fed into the system from a power clip, the system converted the energy into coherent balls of photons, or photon bundles. The magnets then accelerated the bolt forward at luminal speeds. Due to the nature of the Photons it was more powerful than a normal laser, but it normally had a shorter range. Some weapons though, like the X-5 Sub Machine Gun compensated for this by pumping more power which of course lowered the round count.
