The group were popular amongst Peel listeners, to the extent that the band had seven entries in the Festive Fifty during Peel's time. He would also play exclusive album tracks from the band, including on one show from 27 August 1980, where he played 6 tracks from their Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables LP. By the end of 1981, however, Peel somehow became disillusioned with their sounds and complained that their music wasn't as vigorous as it used to be, In 1986, though, he did play some tracks from their final album, Bedtime For Democracy.
  • Dead Kennedys is a punk band from San Francisco, California. During the 1980s, the band gained a large underground following in the international punk music scene. Their music mixed the more experimental elements of English 1970s punk with the raw energy of the 1980s American hardcore punk scene. Dead Kennedys' songs mix the deliberately shocking lyrics of punk with a humorous, acerbic, satirical, and sarcastic left-wing commentary on current social and political issues. Many of the band's songs criticize the right-wing ideologies of the religious right and the Ronald Reagan administration.
  • Dead Kennedys formed in June 1978 in San Francisco, California, when East Bay Ray (Raymond Pepperell) advertised for bandmates in the newspaper The Recycler, after seeing a ska-punk show at Mabuhay Gardens in San Francisco. The original band lineup consisted of Jello Biafra (Eric Reed Boucher) on vocals, East Bay Ray on guitar, Klaus Flouride (Geoffrey Lyall) on bass, and Ted (Bruce Slesinger) on drums and percussion. This lineup recorded their first demos. In early to mid July, the band recruited 6025 (Carlos Cadona) as a secondary guitarist. Their first show was on July 19, 1978, at the Mabuhay Gardens in San Francisco, California.
