One night Dorothy couldn't get a babysitter, but Ample Annie, also working at the club, volunteers for babysitting so Dorothy can work, but after she drops wine glasses after a patron makes a pass at her, she is fired. Despondent, she is sitting in the lobby with her son when Morty Price stops and takes her up to his room, on the premise of talking to the hotel's owners, Johnny Cannata and Frank Doss to help her get her job back, but takes the opportunity to attempt to rape her, after warning him to back off, Dorothy stabs Price to death with a steak knife when he tries again, then takes some tally sheets of bets Price made with Doss to line her baby's bag, and fled, only to be found by Doss' men, who try to kill her, unsuccessfully. Later, after a failed attempt for help from her family, Dorothy moved into Annie's place, which is where Doss' men find her again, but Cannata's son, Robbie, finds her first, offers $1000 and a plane ticket out of Miami, then defends her from the hitmen, even taking a bullet in the process.
