Desirability
  • Halberds of defense are not actually that useful, in practice. They share a weapon class with common spears, and the player can often come across a spear that is more powerful than a halberd of defense if it has a favorable prefix or suffix, bearing in mind that special weapons cannot get such prefixes/suffixes. More significantly, unlike halberds of defense spears can be coupled with shields; whilst halberds of defense provide a very good DV bonus themselves, due to the mechanics of the DV bonuses that shields get, a good well-trained shield can yield more DV. Halberds of defense are still useful as a defensive option if the player manages to stumble upon one before getting a chance to train a lot with a good shield, though due to their rarity this doesn't tend to happen... unless one is found around the start of the game in the Small Cave, where they can sometimes be generated when the cave is created.

Description
  • Halberd of defense is a special / 'naturally-suffixed' type of weapon in ADOM. They have the same damage stats and unidentified form as regular mithril halberds, though they also boost the PC's DV by 18 whilst wielded. Also, they are made of iron rather than mithril. It is perhaps notable that since 'of defense' exists as a generic suffix, it is possible to find a generic 'halberd of defense' which is a different type of weapon entirely... though since the DV bonus provided by weapons with the generic suffix are not as clearly identified by the game, the player is unlikely to confuse the two types of halberds of defense.
Material
  • Iron
Symbol
Sources
  • Halberds of defense can be randomly generated by the same means as all other generic loot, albeit rarely. Darkforge and the Small Cave appear to often spawn two-handed weapons of various danger levels, though rarely halberds of defense.
