It was also one of the naval vessels to not be updated with the latest wiring of United Equinox Electronics. In April 2012, because of its faulty wiring system, the U.S.S. Brewer fell victim to an arson-related terrorist attack by Navy civilian engineer and arsonist Tobey Abbott which resulted in Abbott's death due to the circumstances forcing him to be caught in his own trap. The only other victim of the attack was Marine First Lieutenant Eric Ramsey, who had briefly witnessed the attack and was killed by blunt force trauma to the head after being knocked back by the force of the explosion.

The ship also only ended up spared with major damage instead of critical enough damage to cause it to sink because of the wiring hitting propane tanks that also drowned out the fire after the explosion before it could hit the munitions chamber below. The only other victim of the attack was Marine First Lieutenant Eric Ramsey, who had briefly witnessed the attack and was killed by blunt force trauma to the head after being knocked back by the force of the explosion. After the attack, the U.S.S. Brewer was put into dry-dock at Naval Station Norfolk for extensive repairs, with NCIS Agent Timothy McGee going in to investigate, although he ultimately wasn't able to do much on the actual investigation before the rest of the NCIS Major Case Response Team arrived due to the fact that McGee had spent the night in the ship's sick bay, suffering from seasickness which would have contaminated the crime scene. New Orleans-based NCIS agent, Meredith Brody, was the Agent Afloat on board the Navy ship before she chose to be reassigned in the aftermath of the attack on the U.S.S. Brewer.
