abstract
  • The 2528 Eridanus II Revolt was a rebellion on the colony of Eridanus II. In the aftermath of the outbreak of the Human-Covenant War, the colonial government instituted a number of policies that increasingly encroached on the citizens' civil liberties, under the guise of the looming threat of the Covenant. With decades of resentment already lingering on the colony, many citizens took the streets, or went on strike to protest the government's policies. On February 28th, the government sent the colony's Colonial Militia, and elements of the UNSC Army to Luxor with the intent of containing the increasing unrest. After several days, groups of the personnel, some of whom were conscripts, made common cause with the protestors. In a reactionary decision, Governor William Banton declared martial law, and handed over control of the colony to General Vladimir Zilinski. On March 4th, after news of the institution of martial law reached the mutineering units in Luxor, they, with the support of civilian fighters, attacked the units still loyal to the government, fearing a preemptive strike by the loyalist forces. Within days, the mutiny spread through the ranks of the militia, and violence broke out. Pleading with the United Nations Space Command for additional forces, Zilinski's requests were denied, due to the extreme need for resources in the Harvest Campaign. After two weeks of heavy fighting, most of the major population centers had been taken by the Insurrectionists, and with the death or capture of Zilinski, Banton, and their respective cabinets, the colonial government was effectively ousted, replaced by a rebel loyal one.
