  • A fingerprint was a characteristic of one's digits that could be used to confirm one's identity via biometrics. They were included on identity tapes. In 2153, Commander Trip Tucker used his thumbprint to enter the locked quarters of T'Pol. (ENT: "Rajiin") A fingerprint match helped confirm the bodily death of Rao Vantika. (DS9: "The Passenger") Thumbprints could be used in lieu of signatures. In 2374, Luther Sloan threatened Julian Bashir with confinement in a maximum security cell for the duration of the Dominion War unless he put his thumbprint on a confession. (DS9: "Inquisition")
  • A fingerprint is Fingerprints are formed from the skin’s uneven surface of ridges and valleys. When recorded, a fingerprint appears as a series of dark lines that represents the high, peaking portion of the ridged skin; the white space is the valley (the low, shallow portion of the ridged skin) between the ridges. Ridges do not always form long and continuous patters. Often, ridges are shorter and stop and start abruptly. The result is a unique pattern of specific characteristics such as ending ridges or dividing ridges and dots.

The flow of the overall ridges is used to assign a fingerprint classification (loops, whorls, etc.). Minutiae information — the location, direction and orientation of the ridge endings and bifurcations (splits) along a ridge path — are then gathered and used to develop the fingerprint template.

(DS9: "The Passenger") A Cardassian's thumbprint on a Kressari PADD was all the evidence Kira Nerys needed in 2370 to prove to the Chamber of Ministers a connection between Cardassia and The Circle. Once the thumbprint established the shocking truth behind The Circle, Minister Jaro Essa's attempted coup d'etat against the Bajoran Provisional Government immediately collapsed. (DS9: "The Siege") Thumbprints could be used in lieu of signatures. In 2374, Luther Sloan threatened Julian Bashir with confinement in a maximum security cell for the duration of the Dominion War unless he put his thumbprint on a confession. (DS9: "Inquisition")
