Held at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari on May 1 1994, the event is known as one of the darkest weekends in Formula One history, due to accidents which claimed the lives of Roland Ratzenberger and 3-time World Champion and polesitter Ayrton Senna. Qualifying on Saturday was also marred by a major accident involving Rubens Barrichello in which the Brazilian was lucky to escape with his life. According to the Senna movie, Senna talked to Barrichello after the crash happened. The race was won by Benetton-Ford Cosworth driver Michael Schumacher, his third consecutive victory which extended his Championship lead to 23 points.
