The Sons of Mithras, or Mithraics, were the dominant faction within the Sacred Congregation before the Messianic Voices expanded their power base in the Roman Empire. It is important to remember that Mithraism is not really one faith. Persian Mithraism may or may not have very much to do with the better-known Roman variant of the faith beyond certain superficial details, such as Mithras’ status as a war god. Persian Mithraism, for example, does not include any images of the deity slaying a bull, despite the prominence of that image in the Roman church.
