A vidsys is a terran device used for long distance communication between star systems. In use by 2488, by 2503 they had been in use long enough for some models to be rendered out of date. They are quite expensive to use—twice as much as an interplanetary fone. The visdys has a screen and a light for indication of incoming calls, flashing red when one is received. Messages can be sent and viewed later or a two-way connection can be established with communication in real-time. At least some locations (e.g. Umoja) have signal origin codes that are given.

The vidsys appears to be a somewhat resilient piece of equipment, with second-hand systems and/or battered ones still able to function (quirks aside).
