Nathan was the son of King David and Bathsheba, the older brother of Solomon. He was David's third son born in Jerusalem. In the New Testament, the genealogy of Jesus according to Gospel of Luke includes Nathan because it describes the maternal lineage through Mary. A lineage recorded according to Matthew does not include Nathan, because it describes the paternal lineage through Joseph, and correspondingly Solomon, the youngest son of Bathsheba.

abstract
  • Nathan was the son of King David and Bathsheba, the older brother of Solomon. In Jewish tradition, when a person gets married to somebody, it is said house of bride will also be known in the son's name also. The first chapter of Mathew states that Jesus is in the lineage of Joseph. But Jeremiah 22:24-30 God pronounces a curse on Jeconiah (lineage of David) and his descendants, declaring them ineligible to sit upon the throne of David. If Jesus was Joseph's son then Jesus would have been disqualified to hold the position of King. If Jesus was adopted then Prophecy of coming Messiah would have been invalid in case of Jesus, as he is not of the line of David. But Jesus is the genuine child of Mary, and the Jewish Talmud refers to Mary as the Daughter of Heli. So Matthew Chapter 1 states the lineage of Joseph, and Luke States the Lineage of Mary. Zechariah 12:12 make a reference to the "House Of Nathan", which based on the closeness to a reference to the "House of David" indicates this may be the same Nathan who was David's son.
