Sir Edward Smith (1857 - 20 September 1926). Chairman of the Royal London Mutual Insurance Society. Sat as a Progressive Party member of the London County Council representing Bethnal Green North East 1901-22. Deputy Chairman of the County Council 1909–10. In 1905 he presented a cup to be awarded annually to the the London Fire Brigade station that had the "smartest average time of turning out". One of London's leading magistrates, he was Chairman of the Standing Joint Committee of London Justices and of the Tower Bench of Magistrates at the time of his death. Knighted in 1916.
