Despite his arrogance, the flaw that has been his constant downfall is his tendency to disappear. Auel's following is nearly cultish in regards to their unquestioning loyalty, and without their leader, his armies tend to fall apart from desertion and infighting within days. His actions have made him a highly controversial figure. His use of Nazi Germany organization structures coupled with his totalitarian rule have earned him public criticism for being a Nazi.
