The site was formerly part of Exeter House, the London residence of the Earls of Exeter (formerly Burghley House and Cecil House), almost opposite the Savoy. The official opening date was March 29, 1831. The building had two auditoriums and was used for holding religious and philanthropic meetings, and as a concert hall. In 1880 the lease was purchased by the Young Men's Christian Association, and it reopened in the following year as the organisation's London headquarters. The YMCA decided to build new premises in Tottenham Court Road, moving to the new building in 1907. Exeter Hall was demolished in the same year, and its site is now occupied by the Strand Palace Hotel.
