It also has maritime borders with the Asian Union (Sea of Okhotsk), Scandinavia (Arctic Ocean), and the United States (Nicholas Bay). The country's immense size makes it one of the largest, most populous, more resource abundant, and most ethnically diverse in the world. Being the sixth most populous country in the world, spanning 11 time zones, and having over 100 ethnicities, it covers most of Europe and Asia. The country is extremly rich in fossil fuels and mineral resources, making it one of the richest countries in the world. It was made out of a group of people known as the East Slavs, who between the 3rd and 8th Centuries was one of the oldest known European nations. It was an Orthodox Christian nation during the 988 influenced from the Byzantines. During the Mongol invasion though, the Golden Horde overran them an eventually conquered the Russian states. However, the Grand Duchy of Moscow united the states and managed to drive the Mongols out. However, Russia was cut off from western technological advancement, but during Peter the Great’s reign, it managed to catch up with the technological change with Europe. During the 14th, 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries, Russia grew up to 35,000 km2 per year. During its time, it seized land from the Tatars, Pole-Lithuanians, Turks (includes Turkish tribes and the Ottomans), and Swedes. From the Rurik to Romanov Dynasties, it seized territory from the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, conquered an untamed Siberia, and seized warm water coasts from the Ottomans and Swedes. Eventually, during the Napoleonic Wars, the country was on the anti-French coalition for most of the early 19th Century, though the St. Peterbsurg Accords ended their involvement. During post-war Europe, Russia has seen technological, economical, and political achievements under the influence and support of the French. Since the Russian Revolution though, it has been of the road to democracy. For the mid and late 19th Century and the 20th Century, it has been with war with France three times (two against and one with it) and has been a major player in the Cold War, siding with the United States and the anti-French world. The Second Russian Revolution, though much more peaceful than its previous counterpart, led the downfall of the Romanov Dynasty, paving the war for the federal republic. Russia has the world's fourth largest economy by nominal GDP and the fifth largest by purchasing power party, with the 4th largest nominal military budget. It is one of the world's nuclear weapons states and possesses more WMDs other than France, though it was greatly reduced in the 1980's. Russia is a great power and a permanent member of the International League Security Council, a member of the G Unions, the Pacific Organization, the World Economic Organization, and the Asian-Pacific Economic Union.
