Queen Marie I (1904-1963) was the first reigning queen of Arkansas and the first monarch of Arkansas as distinct from Canada and Minnesota. Her father was King Pierre I of Canada, Minnesota, and Arkansas. Because Arkansas had rejected salic law, while Canada and Minnesota retained it, the kingdoms were separated. This was very much to the delight of the Arkansans who had long resented rule from distant Québec. Arkansas rejoiced to have their own monarch, and a palace was built for her in Baton Rouge.
