The black torc is an artifact amulet in ADOM. It grants bad luck as per the cursed intrinsic, resistance to fire, cold, shock, and gives a +10 speed bonus. It is also a halfway decent thrown weapon, dealing okay damage and returning after being thrown, and being an undead slayer. Its most annoying property is the fact that it immediately curses itself when equipped on the neck slot, which means it must be uncursed or blessed it again to take it off and use other amulets.

Desirability
| - A tricky subject. It's not a bad artifact - its benefits are considerable, even taking the cursed intrinsic into account. However, you may often find yourself in situations in which you need to use other amulets, and having to spend a scroll of uncursing or a potion of holy water to get rid of the torc is not really worth it. . Its intrinsics do, however, give it short-time value in certain situations, for instance running from ancient red, white or blue dragons you encounter in, for instance, the Dwarven Halls, granting you resistance to the respective breath attacks and additional speed.
Since it does not autocurse upon equipping in the missile slot, the black torc is a passable thrown weapon, but unfortunately does not benefit from or train any weapon skill and does not grant the benefit of any of its intrinsics while worn in the missile slot or any hand. It does still slay undead, so is powerful enough against them to justify its use.
All in all, it's not because of this artifact that you should choose the Kill Keethrax quest, Keethrax being a difficult enemy to defeat to begin with.
Arguably mist elves benefit from torc as their tiny hp pools benefit from having easy source of multiple elemental resistances.
