Amandil was the leader of the Faithful in Númenor, and came to be the eighteenth and last Lord of Andúnie. His life as Lord of Andúnie and as one of the Faithful sired the High Kings of Gondor and Arnor who preserved their ways through the Dúnedain of Middle-earth on up to Aragorn II Elessar. Elendil the Tall was his son.

W Númenorze wysławił się jako doskonały kapitan statków. Za dni wspólnej młodości cieszył się serdecznym przywiązaniem Ar-Pharazôna, mimo iż był Przyjacielem Elfów. Zasiadał w radzie królewskiej aż do przybycia Saurona. W końcu król usunął go z Rady Berła, rozkazał mu opuścić Andúnië i przenieść się do Rómenny.

W Rómennie potajemnie zgromadził ludzi wiernym Valarom. Gdy dowiedział się, że Ar-Pharazôn szykuje się do wojny z Valarami zamierzał potajemnie, wzorem Eärendila dostać się do Amanu i przebłagać ich, by uwolnili Númenor od Saurona i ocalili Wiernych. Wziął więc swój statek i z trzema sługami wypłynął na morze. Najpierw pożeglował na wschód, aby nie wzbudzić żadnych podejrzeń, lecz gdy już znalazł się poza zasięgiem wzroku zmienił kurs na zachodni. Jednocześnie kazał swojemu synowi Elendilowi przygotować statki, na których on i Wierni mieli opuścić Númenor. Nie wiadomo czy udało mu się dotrzeć do Valinoru i czy Valarowie chcieli słuchać jego próśb. Przypuszczalnie to dzięki Valarom Elendilowi udało się ocaleć w dniu zagłady Númenoru.
