| - Maester Pol schildert in seiner Abhandlung über die Metallverarbeitung der Qohorik, die er während seines mehrjährigen Aufenthalts in der Freien Stadt verfasst hat, wie sorgfältig die Geheimnisse gehütet werden: Er selbst wurde drei Mal öffentlich ausgepeitscht und aus der Stadt verbannt, weil er zu viele Fragen stellte. Beim letzten Mal wurde ihm außerdem eine Hand abgeschlagen, weil er auch beschuldigt wurde, eine Klinge aus valyrischem Stahl gestohlen zu haben. Pol selbst behauptet, der wahre Grund für seine endgültige Verbannung läge in dem Umstand begründet, dass er die Blutopfer entdeckte - darunter auch die Tötung von neugeborenen Sklaven -, welche die Schmiede von Qohor nutzen, um einen Stahl zu erzeugen, der dem des Freistaats gleichkommt.

- Polyfemus, known more commonly as Pol, is the captain of the guard in Sophos' dad's army who was meant to protect Sophos in The Thief who accompanies Gen, the Magus and his apprentices, Sophos and Ambiades, to search for Hamiathes's Gift.
