McCutcheon decided to give his education priority over his career in 1982 and left Kitchener to go to the University of Prince Edward Island. He played there for four years and graduated in 1986. Still interested in playing hockey, McCutcheon signed as a free agent with the Calgary Flames in 1986. He played three seasons in the minors without getting another NHL shot. He finished off his career with two seasons for the senior Charlottetown Islanders and retired in 1991.
