  • Tom Swift and his Electric Runabout is an adventure novel written by Victor Appleton. Published in 1910, it was the fifth installment in the Tom Swift series, and told the story of Swift's adventures in an electricity-driven car. Indiana Jones, who was an avid reader of the Tom Swift books (at least according to his girlfriend Nancy Stratemeyer, daughter of the author, who complained that he spent too much time reading the books), found himself reading a slightly worn copy of the book in February 1916 shortly before he himself got involved in the investigation of the theft of a prototype of Thomas Edison's electric motor.
