In the early 1970's, Sher belonged to a small group of "anarchist" actors and writers working at the Liverpool Everyman Theatre, which also included Bernard Hill. A prolific actor on both stage and screen, his most recent stage performance was the lead role of Willy Loman for the Royal Shakespeare Company's revival of Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman (co-starring Sir Christopher Lee's niece, British actress Harriet Walter).
