X-rays are part of the electromagnetic spectrum. They have very high frequency, and can penetrate through skin and flesh - but not metal or bone. Therefore this means they are ideal for producing photographs of bones or 'X-rays'. They are also used to check metal components for faults. X rays can cause cells to become cancerous in the long term - therefore staff take precaution at hospitals when these photographs are taken. They were called X-rays because the founders could not think of a name for the ray they had discovered so just called it X or unknown, hence X-ray.........
