The 1961 World 600 was a Grand National (now Nextel Cup) event held at Lowe's Motor Speedway on May 28, 1961. David Pearson, the winner of three championships and 105 races, won his first career race. Leading 225 of the 400 laps, Pearson held off Fireball Roberts by two laps for victory.
