Plattekill Landing (or simply "The Landing") is a wizarding community on the west bank of the Hudson River, several miles east and several thousand feet below Kaaterskill Academy of Magic. The Landing was settled by magic folk in the 18th century on the site of a Native American village that had been abandoned since the mid-17th century. The steamboat Kaaterskill carries students between Hoboken Terminal and The Landing at the start and end of every term at Kaaterskill Academy. At The Landing, students board carriages and wagons that carry them up into the mountains to the school. A number of shops and hostelries (including the Wild Goose Tavern) serve faculty and students of Kaaterskill and their families, as well as traveling wizards and witches.
