In the Marines, he was great at wielding the M203 Grenade launcher, he could fire it like someone could fire a mortar, he was that good. He took all of that experience with him in S.T.A.R.S. earning him a position as an explosive specialist. When a door couldn't be opened, Ted went in to breach it helping the others to get in. The 1997 hostage crisis marked his career, he almost died during the operation to save 34 hostages. When he tried to force a barricaded door to allow his team mates to go in, one of the criminals opened fire on him with an automatic weapon keeping him pinned down. Paul Andrews, the youngest member, saved his life by covering his exit, killing the terrorist in the process. As a result of this, Ted thanked Paul for his actions and the two became great friends, backing each other up.
