He was born in Santa Flavia, Palermo, Italy, a small fishing town in the northwest part of the island of Sicily. His father was Angelo Marino and Mother was Antonia Scola. Salvatore Marino came to the US on 22 Sep 1921 on the ship Canopic leaving Naples, Italy and arriving in Boston, Massachusetts, he was headed to Pittsburgh, PA where his cousin Salvatore Marino was living. They settled first in New York City and moved to Pittsburgh in 1922 where he became a member of the Pittsburgh crime family and controlled the numbers racket in Sharon, Pennsylvania. He later owned and operated the Sharon Cheese Co. in Sharon, PA. Marino was involved in the slot machine and numbers rackets in the 1920s and 1930s. He founded the California Cheese Co. in 1949. He was the principal figure in a libel suit that former San Francisco Mayor brought against Look Magazine after the publication alleged Joseph Alioto was linked to Marino and other organized crime members. Marino testified during the Alioto libel case that he had been involved in the slot machine and numbers rackets in Pennsylvania. He passed away in 1974.
