The Wingham Area Fire Department, located in Wingham, provided fire protection to the Town of Wingham, Township of Howick and Township of Turnberry. In 2001, Wingham amalgamated with the Village of Blyth and the Township of East Wawanosh to form the Township of North Huron. The two fire departments located in North Huron (Wingham and the Blyth and District Fire Department) continued to operate as separate entities, with the Wingham & Area Fire Service Board owned by North Huron, the Township of Morris-Turnberry and the Township of Howick.

In 2009, the two Fire Service Boards serving North Huron were disbanded and the North Huron Fire Department formed through the amalgamation of the Blyth and Wingham departments. The Gorrie station became the home of the newly-formed Howick Township Fire Department.
