Jake mentioned a 'mission statement' and then we quickly moved on and have been with the sub-group meetings. So, a "mission" and "philosophy" is hanging out there, at present. The VISION, IMHO, needs to be of a nature so that PPS becomes a magnet for growth for the city. People should want to move here to raise their children because, in part, we provide for an excellent sports landscape that is supportive, competitive, and full of opportunities that challenge our kids, especially while in school ages, but even in other years as well. First Whack Mission Statement (snipped from elsewhere too):

We should not be about the management of decline when it comes to athletics and sports. Let's turn that page. Pittsburgh is a sports town. Our schools, its teams, coaches, athletes and boosters need to be as strong or stronger as anyone anywhere. My personal / professional slogan as a vision is to CREATE LITERATE OLYMPIANS HERE. Anything less, then you are begging people to go and move elsewhere. (But, I don't expect nor presume you'll all drink my flavor of Kool-Aid without hesitation. :) ) Here is another VISION statement from elsewhere that I could live with: First Whack Mission Statement (snipped from elsewhere too): We talked in our facilities sub group about gyms, fields and pools. But we also need storage spaces, offices for coaches, varsity team locker rooms, functional weight rooms, places that welcome the students and community so they can refuel after school, do some homework, visit with others about college visits / admissions. Plus, some of this needs to happen on Sunday for the little guys and gals and their parents, officials and coaches too. Much of that is bricks and mortar environment and access to those teaching and conditioning settings with structured and supportive programs. I think we should be talking about the full range, from SPORTS to RECREATION. I think we need to encourage and drive much more participation, support and winning. That's three distinct areas too. Now we have something to throw darts at. Jake, what were your thoughts? Did you ponder a mission statement? Can you put it out there in an email? Others? BTW, I feel that we need to use some modern tools to 'wordsmith' these minutes, action plans, and eventual outcomes. Some of this can be done online -- beyond face to face meetings. Not all of it, but some. I hope that we can strengthen that capacity so we don't all get crushed under waves of meetings.
