Grand Admirals were appointed by Emperor Palpatine and answered directly to the Emperor, or his authorized executors, in all matters. The creation of the rank of Grand Admiral two years before the Battle of Yavin was widely recognized as a means to increase the Emperor's direct control of the Imperial Military. abstract	Grand Admirals were appointed by Emperor Palpatine and answered directly to the Emperor, or his authorized executors, in all matters. The creation of the rank of Grand Admiral two years before the Battle of Yavin was widely recognized as a means to increase the Emperor's direct control of the Imperial Military. However, although all exceptionally gifted officers, the Grand Admirals were not just front-line commanders; rather, they included several technical specialists and theoreticians, enabling them to serve as a leadership cadre for the whole military—and indeed the whole Empire. At least one Grand Admiral was given the title of Warlord upon achieving the rank; the same was possibly true for the rest of the Grand Admirals as well. After the supposed death of Palpatine at Endor in 4 ABY, many of the original Grand Admirals went rogue, and either killed each other were were assassinated by the New Republic. As Palpatine transferred his essence to a clone body on Byss, a planet in the Deep Core, he began thinking of appointing a new set of Grand Admirals for his new Dark Empire. Around 9 ABY, after following the progress of the Imperial Civil War and of the continuing Galactic Civil War, he picked several officers who displayed resourcefulness, tactical and strategic skill, high intellect, and loyalty. These six officers were contacted and told to come to Byss, where he announced his existence to them, and promoted them to Grand Admirals.
