The spirit shards are bound to a Clay Golem, Jade Golem and Bronze Golem, and controlled by the Lotus Assassins to create a totally obedient army. The Last Spirit Monk created a Spirit shard from a Zeng Sai corpse to corrupt a Jade Golem who controls Clay Golems, when infiltrating the Lotus Assassin Fortress.
