In 1802, during the Republican Wars that tore through Europe, King Victor Emmanuel I was ousted from Piedmont by the French army, and moved his court to Cagliari. The island saw a few pro-republican uprising over the years but despite early crackdown on them, later kings soften up their approach and granted a form of contitutional-monarchy to the people.
