Waterman's debut came in 1980, when he competed at Riverside. Starting 28th in the field of thirty-six, Waterman completed most of the race before a late engine issue left him 25th. Luckily, Waterman was quite a bit better at Ontario, completing all but a few laps and finishing 20th. Waterman's next three races came in 1981, and all of those races would come at Riverside. By far his best run came in the season opener, completing all but two laps to show a career-best 10th. But he also managed to lead a lap in the June race before finishing 23rd and ran a solid 15th in the November event. Both of Waterman's races in the 1982 season also came at Riverside. This time, Waterman proved to be better in the June race, driving his way to a solid 11th place finish. He did manage to lead a lap again in the latter race (November), but lost a clutch and finished 33rd. Waterman's final races were in 1983, and once again would come at Riverside. Waterman was solid in both of those races, recording top-twenty finishes. He could have been better in the June race but a late engine failure left him 20th while Waterman was 15th in his career finale, this coming in the November event.
