Due to the 1956 Winter Olympics being hosted by Italy in Cortina d'Ampezzo, the Serie A was not contested during the 1955-56 season. The top-tier Italian teams participated in only a few international tournaments, two of which they won: HC Milan Inter won a tournament in Geneva (Hofstetter Cup), while Fiat Torino won a tournament hosted by Chamonix (Cup Dauphinè). However, the lower-level leagues, the Serie B and its final tournament (the Promozione), and the Allievi (student competition) were contested as usual.
