He graduated from University College Cork in 1999 with a first class honours degree in English and Italian, however because of an irregularity in the university system, he spoke little or no Italian. He was born in Dublin, but his family moved to Cork where he was educated at a school in Carragaline, and later at Christian Brother's College in Cork. He began his career as a dancer, aged 18, in Cork. From 1995 to 2007 he was in Cork, on the staff of the Cork Dance School, during which period he achieved major acclaim as one of the country's most respected Irish dancers. In 2000 he moved to Dublin, as an employee of the ESB, working at various positions including operating the company's internal website the intranet. He continued dancing until 2007, during which time he became All Ireland Irish dancing champion. He gave up gave up dancing in 2007 after moving to Mol, Belgium to live with his partner Hilary Kennefick - a teacher His real bent was towards photography and literature, but while he remains unpublished himself, he reads widely. He is a collector of cameras and photographic equiptment, most of which he's purchased from Russia, or Eastern Europe.
